The Chairman of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Md Nurul Amin has resigned following protests from the commission's employees.

Nurul submitted his resignation letter to the president today (20 August), citing personal reasons.

Earlier today, employees of BERC locked the main gate and staged a sit-in protest.

On 13 August, a joint meeting of the employees issued an ultimatum demanding the resignation of the chairman, commissioners and deputed officials from the regulatory body.

The next day, the commission's employees submitted a memorandum to the principal secretary, highlighting various irregularities and inconsistencies within the commission.

Since 18 August, the employees have been on work abstention demanding the resignation of the chairman and members. The drivers and office assistants of the chairman and members also joined the protest.

Nurul Amin was appointed as the chairman of the commission on 22 March 2023.
