At least two cars suffered damage as gunfire was reported at the Dhaka International School (ISD) premises in Dhaka's Bashundhara Residential Area today (8 May) afternoon.

The bullet was fired from a gun of a security personnel of a local conglomerate. The security team went to the school to pick up the son of the head of the business group from the school," Rajon Kumar Saha, assistant police commissioner, Badda Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

"The security personnel of the business group went to school to pick up the student after the school hours ended. The gun was accidentally fired from the security guard's weapon. Two cars were damaged but no one was injured," he said.

"Two cars were damaged. Other than that nothing much happened. The bullet was fired due to carelessness. Still, the matter is being looked into. Details will be known later," he added.

In a press release issued later in the day, the International School Dhaka (ISD) said it duly addresses the incident of gunfire that took place in the vicinity of the school grounds.

"Following a thorough investigation, it has been determined that it was the result of a single, accidental discharge of a weapon by a bodyguard employed by an ISD family. The incident was isolated, and there is no ongoing threat to the school community," reads the media release.

Mentioning that the safety of the school community is a top priority at ISD, the school said all ISD students and parents must abide by the rule that no firearms are permitted inside or near the campus.

"Only nannies are allowed access on the campus during pick up time to collect the students in the Primary School. Families should consider the genuine need for bodyguards to accompany students to school to minimise safety risks such as those today," said the press release.

It further stated that bodyguards are required to always remain outside the entry gate.
