Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has asked the leaders and activists of her party to work unitedly to ensure voter turnout at the polling centres during the 12th national parliamentary elections.

She issued the directive while exchanging views with the aspirant AL candidates for the upcoming national elections at her official Ganabhaban residence in the capital on Sunday.

After the meeting, Awami League Presidium member Abdur Rahman told reporters that Sheikh Hasina has given some instructions to the nomination aspirants of her party.

"She has ordered to work unitedly for the candidates to be nominated by the party. Also, she said that everyone should work unitedly and go to the voters' doorsteps and call them to come to the polling station," said Rahman.

Asked about other instructions from the prime minister at the meeting, Abdur Rahman said, alongside the nominated candidate, she has asked to keep a dummy candidate [alternative candidate] so that if any nominated candidate's nomination is cancelled or the nomination is withdrawn, then the dummy candidate can contest in the elections.

"The leader [Sheikh Hasina] has asked everyone to work unitedly for the party candidate," said Awami League's Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif.

Hanif added that the prime minister has asked to keep alternative candidates so that no one can conduct any irregularities during the election. She has also asked to work for increasing voter turnout.

Briefing the reporters after the meeting, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim quoted her as saying, "As the Awami League has been in power for a consecutive period, the people of the country have got peace, they have got relief, and have started living well. If people vote for us in the next election, development will continue if we form the government."

So that the BNP-Jamaat evil circle cannot play with people's fate, everyone should work together.

The Awami League sold its nomination forms for the 7 January national polls for four days, from 18 to 21 November. The party announced the names of the nominated candidates at a press conference at its Bangabandhu Avenue central office on Sunday (26 November).
