BSMMU welcomes first test tube baby
The baby was born through a caesarean section
In a first for the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), a test tube baby was born at the hospital at 9:30am yesterday.
The baby was born through a caesarean section, BSMMU's Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Sharfuddin Ahmed, who was present during the birth, confirmed to The Business Standard.
The birth took place under the supervision of Dr Jesmine Banu, head of the Reproductive Endocrine and Infertility Department.
The Barishal couple, who became parents for the first time, had been dealing with issues related to infertility for 13 years.

They had sought treatment in different places, but found no resolution.
In 2022, the couple began In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) at the BSMMU's Department of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
This is where they were offered the ICSI (Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection), a method where sperm cells are injected into the egg's cytoplasm.
After proper treatment, the mother got pregnant last February.
After a long wait of around 38 weeks, the test tube baby was finally born.
BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Ahmed termed the feat another feather in the cap of the hospital.
He expressed hope that the successful birth would encourage other childless couples to seek treatment at the hospital.
Dr Jesmine said usually 5-10% of infertility patients require IVF procedure.
