A number of top government officials of Narayanganj district, including the deputy commissioner (DC), superintendent of police (SP), and civil surgeon, have been quarantined after they came in contact with a doctor, who is a potential suspect of Covid-19.

Monirul Islam, additional superintendent of police (ASP) of Narayanganj, confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.

"Deputy Commissioner Jasim Uddin started feeling sick on April 7 and his swab sample was sent to the IEDCR the following day, " Additional Deputy Commissioner Selim Reza said, adding he was in good health.

"We have decided to stay home complying with the social distancing rules as we came in contact with upazila Health Official Jahidul Islam who is now a suspect of Covid-19," he added.

The district's Civil Surgeon Mohammad Imtiaz said, "I am in home quarantine. I am working from home and providing necessary directives from here."

Superintendent of Police Jayedul Alam, who is also working from home, said, "I am not in home quarantine, but following social distancing rules, since I also came in contact with the district's focal person for Covid-19."

When contacted, Sadar Upazila Health Officer Jahidul Islam, also the focal person on coronavirus outbreak in Narayanganj, said, "Physically I am not doing well, but am still trying to help over phone as much as possible."

Earlier, he was moved to isolation after he had started showing symptoms of coronavirus in quarantine.

As one of the national clusters of coronavirus in Bangladesh, Narayanganj has as many as 46 coronavirus patients, including doctors, nurses and hospital ward boys, who are currently receiving treatment under the IEDCR. So far, six have died in the district.

Narayanganj district went under complete lockdown from Wednesday, April 8, to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus following city Mayor Salina Hayat Ivy's request for curfew to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on April 5.

The lockdown will continue until further notice, although emergency services such as medical, food supply chain etc will be out of the purview of the restriction.

Narayanganj is the third-largest city in central Bangladesh, located on the bank of the Shitalakshya River, with a population of about 22 lakh. It is also a centre of business and industries, especially jute trade and processing plants, and textile sector. It is nicknamed the Dundee of Bangladesh due to the presence of its many jute mills.
