Health Minister Zahid Malik has requested people with symptoms of Covid-19 to come forward and take the coronavirus tests in order to ensure mass safety by containing the infection in the country.

At a virtual press briefing today Minister Zahid Malik said, "I don't want our people to remain outside the facility of coronavirus testing that the country has provided. Thus, I would call our countrymen to do more and more tests for the sake of their safety and their families as well."

According to IEDCR, 1,759 suspects have been tested so far and of them, 54 found positive for Covid-19.

"Currently, seven health institutions in Dhaka and three out of the capital are performing coronavirus testing and we have plan to increase the number to 28 by April 20," said Habibur Rahman, MIS director of DGHS.

IEDCR confirmed the first death from coronavirus infection on March 18, second on March 21, third on March 23, fourth on March 24, fifth on March 25 and sixth death on April 1.

Globally, 860,181 people have so far got infected with the highly contagious coronavirus and 42,341 have died from it, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Earlier on March 16, World Health Organization called on all countries to ramp up their testing programmes as the best way to slow the advance of the coronavirus pandemic, and also urged companies to boost production of vital equipment to overcome acute shortages.

"We have a simple message to all countries - test, test, test," WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news conference.
