Ain O Salish Kendra condemns police for breaching privacy centring BNP rally

Human rights campaigner Ain O Salish Kendra on Sunday condemned police for checking the mobile phones of pedestrians and commuters centring the BNP divisional rally in Dhaka held on Saturday.

"Many alleged that their call lists, photos and messages were checked by the law enforcement agency before the BNP rally. It is a complete breach of personal privacy. We strongly denounce such incidents," it said in a press release.

"Privacy is a constitution-recognised fundamental right of individuals. Moreover, it is closely related to one's dignity. Breaching personal privacy is not legit by any means."

According to the media reports, on the occasion of the BNP rally in Dhaka on 10 December, the police searched the mobile phones of people on the roads and looked at their pictures, text messages and call logs to find out whether they were attending the BNP rally, the release reads.

Chhatra League activists in the Sir AF Rahman Hall of Dhaka University also interrogated pedestrians based on their doubts and handed over 12 to police. Even they allegedly tortured some people. Similar allegations were found against other ruling party leaders and workers in different places, including Gazipur, it added.
