BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia could not secure bail in Zia Charitable Trust corruption case because of three main reasons, including abuse of power while staying at the government’s top-most position, the High Court observed on Wednesday.

Moreover, the HC has already received the case documents from the lower court, meaning it is ready to formally hear her appeal on the matter. Hence, there is no need for bail at the moment, the HC bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice SM Kuddus Zaman observed.

Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan represented the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) at the court while advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and advocate Zainul Abedin moved for the BNP chairperson.
The state was represented by Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
The former three-time prime minister filed the bail petition on July 28, saying she deserves bail on the ground that she has been suffering from different diseases and already served one and a half years in jail in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
Former opposition leader Khaleda Zia has been undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for various illness since April 1.
On October 29 last year, a special court in Dhaka convicted her in the case and sentenced her to seven years’ imprisonment.
The ACC had filed the case with Tejgaon police station on August 8, 2011.
