A Dhaka metropolitan court has put six arrested members of militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihadal-Islam (Huji) on a five-day remand on Friday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Shikder passed the order after the detective branch (DB) of police produced the arrestees before the court in a case filed under Anti-Terrorism Act and requested a 10-day remand.

During the hearing, one of the arrestee's lawyer filed a bail plea seeking cancellation of the remand. The other arrestees did not have a lawyer.

The six men placed on remand are Leader of Huji's robbery wing Billal Hossain, 25, Nur Alam, 28, Md Rafiqul Islam, 29, Abul Mia, Abdur Rahman, 30 and Aktar Hossain, 34.

Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) conducted a drive in the capital's Badda area and arrested the militants on Thursday, night.

The details regarding the case were briefed during a friendly match between the CTTC and the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) at Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium in the capital on Friday.

DMP's Additional Police Commissioner and CTTC chief Monirul Islam said, "Bilal Hossain formed a group of seven robbers under his leadership. Intelligence analysis and interrogation revealed that the group was mainly involved in robbery.

"They were robbing people in order to manage and strengthen the organisation and recruit new members. They used chloroform to make people unconscious and rob them. Ujjal alias Ratan, the main leader of the group, is in jail for Agugust 21 grenade attack case. The group was operating under his orders. Earlier, 12 members of Huji were arrested who were involved in robbery and extortion."

"We have largely destroyed the militants' operational capacity. Harkat-ul-Jihad is not much capable of causing destruction. But their plan is to reorganise and try to carry out attacks on different places. We are working to ensure that they cannot do it or get organised again," the CTTC chief further added.

100 millilitres of anaesthetics, a machete, three knives, two masks and a toy pistol were recovered from the arrested militants.
