The authorities of Chattogram Customs House on Tuesday seized a consignment of old photocopy machines, importing which is banned by the authority.

Sources at the customs house said, a Dhaka-based business firm named Access Traders imported 50 units of old photocopy machines instead of brand new multi-functional printers they mentioned in the import documents.

The customs authority is now set to take legal actions against the importer and the firm as per the existing customs law.

On Wednesday, Nur Uddin Milon, deputy commissioner of the Chattogram Customs House told the journalists that following a tip-off, the Audit Investigation and Research (AIR) team examined the consignment imported from Hong Kong.

While physically examining the consignment on December 10 (Tuesday), the AIR team found 50 units of old photocopy machines instead of the declared brand new products, said Nur Uddin Milon.

Earlier, on December 8, the importer's clearing and forwarding agent Ridita Enterprise submitted the bill of entry to the office concerned to discharge the consignment, he added.

The consignment will not be discharged and the responsible persons behind this illegal import will be brought under punishment as per customs law, said the deputy commissioner of Chattogram Customs House.
