Joint forces have conducted a special operation in Gazipur's Sreepur Upazila and arrested an independent candidate for the Gazipur-3 constituency along with his six associates from his home with two foreign pistols, ammunition, and various pieces of communication and assault gear.
The arrested candidate has been identified as Md Enamul Haque Molla, 50. Enamul is a former general secretary of the Barmi Union unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and had recently served as the president of the BNP's Mecca Misfalah unit in Saudi Arabia.
According to sources, the joint operation, led by Major Khandakar Mahiuddin Alamgir of the Gazipur Army Camp, began at around 1:30am today (6 November) and continued till 5:15am at Enamul's multi-storied home in the upazila's Barama village.
Members of the Rapid Action Battalion and police also took part in the raid.
During the search, two foreign pistols, three magazines, four rounds of live ammunition, four walkie-talkie sets, four batons, two tasers, a nail gun, and a knife were seized.
The six other arrestees were identified as Shawkat Mir, 45, Zahid Mia, 40, Mostofa Kamal, 32, Siddiqur Rahman, 34, Bulbul Mia, 35, and Tofazzal Hossain, 45.
Sources revealed that during the raid, Enamul attempted to flee by hiding inside a water tank on the roof, where he was eventually discovered and apprehended.
The detainees, along with the seized weapons and equipment, were later handed over to the Sreepur Model Police Station.
Locals stated that Enamul had been residing in Saudi Arabia for 15 years and returned to Bangladesh following the fall of the Awami League regime last year.
