Barishal mayor sued in 2 cases over attack on UNO residence

Barishal City Corporation Mayor Sadiq Abdullah has been made prime accused in two cases filed in connection with the attack on the official residence of Barishal Sadar upazila UNO and the ensuing clash.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Munibur Rahman filed a case mentioning names of 28 persons, including the mayor, in addition to 70 to 80 anonymous people for the attack on his official residence at the upazila complex on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, Kotwali Model Thana's Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Jamal filed another case showing the mayor as prime accused for obstructing government work and attacking police.

According to the case statements, the attack was conducted in the direction of Mayor Sadiq, who is also the secretary general of Barishal Metropolitan Awami League.

In connection with the cases, police have so far arrested 10 ruling party men, including Barishal City Awami League's Joint Secretary Hasan Mahmud.

The FIR filed by the UNO read that a group of 40 to 50 people in 10 to 15 motorbikes entered the upazila premises around 9.45pm on Wednesday.

The on-duty Anser member informed the UNO that the group was removing various government and political banners, including one displayed marking the National Mourning Day.

Meanwhile, a man named Rajib told the UNO that they were removing the banners in the direction of the mayor.

But the UNO noticed that they were mostly taking down the banner of the National Mourning Day, portraying State Minister for Water Resources Zahid Farooq who is also the lawmaker of Barishal-5 constituency.

The UNO tried to stop them as the banner was supposed to be displayed throughout the month of August, read the statement.

He came under attack when he tried to stop them, read the statement.

Around 30 people including four policemen were injured in the attack, reports our Barishal correspondent.

The authorities later deployed 10 platoons members of the Border Guard of Bangladesh and 10 additional executive magistrates in the city to bring the situation under control.
