Police arrested a union parishad (UP) member and two other people on Thursday for allegedly torturing a young man at a village arbitration in Zakiganj upazila of Sylhet.

The arrestees are Abdus Salam, 53, a member of Kajalshah union parishad, Anwar Hossain and Md Shahjahan of Barban village of the upazila.

Anwar and Shahjahan were held for aiding and abetting the crime, said Sylhet Police Super Mohammad Farid Uddin.

"On Wednesday, a video went viral on Facebook, where a union parishad member was seen touring a man after tying him upside down to a bamboo pole. This is illegal and a heinous crime. After examining the video footage, we started investigation and found that the incident took place five months ago. Police were not informed about it that time. Then we requested victim Gias Uddin of the same village to file a case," said Farid.

"Police arrested Salam around 5pm from the border area Karballa in Kanaighat upazila while he was trying to flee to India," he added.
