SAD leader stabbed in Sylhet, suspect detained

A leader of the Student Against Discrimination (SAD) was stabbed in Sylhet last night (24 July), just hours before the scheduled "July March" of the National Citizen Party (NCP).
The leader, identified as Taufiq Omar Tanvir, 21, a city committee organiser of SAD, was attacked near the Bidya Niketon School in Sylhet's Madina Market area.
Confirming the matter today (25 July), Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam told The Business Standard that one suspect has been detained in connection with the incident.
"The detainee, Maruf Ahmed, 18, was held around 2am from the Akhalia area."
The officer said Tanvir was seriously injured in the knife attack and was immediately rescued by locals and admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
According to locals, the incident occurred over establishing dominance in the area.
Meanwhile, the NCP is set to hold its July rally in Sylhet this afternoon. The party will stage a gathering at the city's Shaheed Minar later in the day.
