Grandmother killed in Sylhet while resisting attempt to abduct granddaughter
Incident took place around 3am Friday in Sylhet’s Goainghat upazila
A grandmother was stabbed to death after she tried to stop a group of armed assailants from forcibly abducting her 14-year-old granddaughter around 3am on Friday in Sylhet's Goainghat upazila.
The incident took place around 3am on Friday in the Birmongol Haor village under Rustampur union. Police recovered the body from the scene at around 10am the following morning.
According to locals and police sources, three unidentified youths broke into the house at night and tried to forcibly take the teenage girl away by covering her mouth. Hearing her screams, her mother rushed in and attempted to intervene but was bitten and injured during the struggle.
As the situation escalated, the girl's grandmother, Dilara Begum, 54, wife of the late Mahmud Hossain, came out from an adjacent room and stood at the doorway calling for help. At that moment, the attackers stabbed her in the right side of her chest. She died on the spot. The assailants then fled, leaving the girl behind.
Both the teenager and her mother were injured in the attack and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
Victim's mother, Sazna Begum, said she woke up suddenly during the night and found the door open. In lightning flashes, she saw a man attacking her daughter. When she tried to resist, the attacker grabbed her daughter and attempted to drag her outside, biting her during the struggle and injuring the girl with a sharp weapon.
Police said they are not treating the incident as an attempted abduction or rape at this stage, adding that investigators suspect prior enmity behind the attack.
Goainghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Moniruzzaman said the attackers have been identified. "Preliminary information suggests the incident may be linked to a financial dispute involving the victim's expatriate son," he said, adding that efforts are underway to arrest those involved.
Police recovered the body with the help of Sub-Inspector Hafiz Uddin and sent it to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
