Noted industrialist and founder of City Bank Deen Mohammad died on Tuesday while undergoing treatment for several old age-related complications. He was 83.

Deen Mohammad, also founder of Phoenix Group, breathed his last at Anwar Khan Modern Medical College Hospital early on the day, City Bank said in a press statement.

Son of Late Hazi Noor Mohammad, he was born on 3 August 1938. He started his business career in 1960 with trading business.

He entered the industries sector in 1962 and over the time established one of the largest conglomerates in the country – Phoenix Group.

The business operations of the Phoenix Group are Phoenix Insurance Company, Phoenix Textile Mills, Phoenix Fabrics, Phoenix Garments, Phoenix Finance and Investments, Phoenix Spinning Mills.

Alongside business activities, Deen was also involved in different socio-cultural organisations. 

He is the former president of Lalbagh Sporting Club, former president of Rahmatgonj Sporting Club, former member of masjid committee at Lalbagh Shahi Mosque, etc.

He was awarded the late Moulana Akram Kha Gold Medal (Industrialization) in 1991 and the Jagadish Chandra Gold Medal in 1992.

In 2010, Phoenix Finance and Investments Limited was awarded with the International Star Award for Quality (ISAQ) in the Gold category from Business Initiative Directions, a prominent business organisation based in Madrid, Spain.
