Brahmanbaria journalists demand stern action against Hefazat demonstration vandals

On Sunday, journalist leaders in Brahmanbaria demanded legal action under the sedition act against Hefazat-e-Islam activists and leaders act who allegedly engaged in vandalism and arson attacks during the organisation's recent demonstrations in the district.

They made this demand during an assembly for journalist solidarity at the Brahmanbaria Press Club today.

The Hefazat men allegedly rampaged from 26 to 28 March in the district during their protests against the recent visit to Bangladesh of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Brahmanbaria Journalists' Union organised the programme at the press club to protest the vandalizing of the press club and many other government and non-government establishments, and the attacks on journalists carried by Hefazat men in the district on 28 March.

Abdul Majid, acting secretary general of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists, Riaz Uddin Jami, president of Brahmanbaria Press Club, and Jabed Rahim Bijon, its general secretary, spoke at the event. Monir Hossain, convener of Brahmanbaria Journalists' Union chaired the event. 

Among others, senior vice president of the district's press club, Pijush Kanti Acharjee, its former president Md Arju, and former general secretary Sadekur Rahman, also spoke at the event.

Speakers said in the name of protest against Modi's visit to Bangladesh, the Hefazat men went on a rampage in the district which amounts to activism against the state and its independence.

The journalist leaders urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to bring the culprits involved in the rampage to justice as soon as possible.
