Information Minister Hasan Mahmud said the Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) had published the country's corruption ranking in favour of TIB donors.

"The TIB is a non-governmental organisation. Though their report does not cause a stir in our neighbouring India, it does in Bangladesh," the minister told a press briefing at his residence in Dhaka Friday.

There is no reason to give too much attention to it, he said. "Is the TIB's report publishing method exclusive for Bangladesh, or it follows the same for other countries too," Hasan Mahmud raised the question.

In a report, the Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Thursday said Bangladesh is positioned as the second most corrupt nation among South Asian countries.

According to the report, the country is only behind Afghanistan, which is the most corruption-prone country in South Asia on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2020.

Bangladesh slipped two notches to become the 12th most corruption-prone nation globally on the index, but it maintained its overall score and rank from the previous year.

The information minister questioned the credibility of the report. He commented that there is a systematic mistake in preparing the report.
