Jordan wants to recruit more than 12,000 skilled readymade garment (RMG) workers from Bangladesh within a year.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen on Tuesday evening told The Business Standard that the head of mission at the Bangladesh embassy in Jordan had informed him that a large RMG company there wants to hire these workers.

He said the recruitment would be processed only through Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited.

The employer and his team will visit Bangladesh in the coming days, he added.

According to foreign ministry sources, about 20,000 skilled Bangladeshi RMG workers are working in Jordan. Apart from Jordan, Bangladeshi RMG workers are working in Egypt, Ethiopia, Malaysia, Dubai and Mauritius.

"A few years ago, some skilled operators from my factory went to Jordan. They were unskilled helpers when they joined here. We taught them and thus they acquired skills," said Shahidullah Azim, chairman of Classic Group.

"The apparel industry has been doing a great job as it is turning unskilled workers into skilled manpower. These skilled workers get job offers from abroad," he said.

Some foreign companies have been hiring skilled operators from Bangladesh since 2004-2005, added Shahidullah, also a former vice president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association.
