International Day for Failure: You can fail at something without being a failure

There is a peculiar way we treat failure. We take one disappointing result and turn it into a verdict on our entire lives.

Fail an examination, and we question our intelligence. Lose a job opportunity, and years of hard work suddenly seem worthless. Watch a relationship fall apart, and we begin to wonder whether we are capable of being loved at all.

Somewhere along the way, we learn to treat individual setbacks as evidence of a much larger inadequacy. We stop saying that something did not work out and start believing that we did not work out.

But what if we have been looking at failure the wrong way all along?

Life is not a single examination with one final result. It is a collection of experiences, relationships, ambitions, choices and unexpected turns. Struggling in one part of it does not mean we are destined to struggle in every other part.

October 13 is observed as the International Day for Failure, an initiative that began in Finland in 2010 with the Aalto Entrepreneurship Society. The day was created to challenge the stigma surrounding failure and encourage people to take risks, learn from setbacks and speak more openly about things that do not go according to plan.

Although the initiative began in the world of entrepreneurship, its message extends far beyond business and professional ambition. It speaks to students who feel defined by their grades, young professionals who believe they are falling behind, people recovering from heartbreak and anyone who has wondered whether a mistake has ruined the life they hoped to build.

"Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better."

Samuel Beckett

When a setback becomes a verdict

We are often taught to measure progress through visible milestones: grades, degrees, jobs, relationships and social recognition. These markers can matter, but the problem begins when we allow them to determine our worth.

A student who performs poorly may mistake a disappointing result for a lack of intelligence. Someone who has been rejected from several jobs may begin to question whether they have anything worthwhile to offer. A relationship ending can leave a person wondering whether they are somehow unlovable.

Social media can make these feelings harder to escape. We see other people's achievements, celebrations and carefully selected milestones without knowing the disappointments, uncertainties or struggles behind them. Their progress becomes the standard against which we judge our own lives.

Yet a single outcome can tell us only so much. An examination result reflects performance under particular circumstances; it cannot measure every form of intelligence or potential. A failed relationship may reveal incompatibilities, mistakes or circumstances that neither person could fully control. A rejection may close one door without determining what lies beyond it.

None of this means that every failure is inconsequential or that we should avoid examining our own mistakes. Some decisions have serious consequences, and some losses cannot simply be undone. But accountability and self-condemnation are not the same thing.

We can acknowledge that we made a mistake without deciding that we are incapable of making better choices. We can regret how something ended without believing that the ending defines everything that came before it, or everything that will follow.

We are more than our worst moments

When life does not follow the plan, it is tempting to interpret the difference between expectation and reality as personal failure.

We imagine where we should be by a certain age, what career we should have established and whom we should be sharing our lives with. When those expectations go unmet, we may feel that we have somehow fallen behind.

But life rarely unfolds in a straight line. Relationships end, careers change direction, ambitions evolve and circumstances force us to reconsider plans we once felt certain about. Sometimes we lose things we worked hard for. Sometimes we discover that what we wanted is no longer what we need.

These experiences can be painful without being proof that our lives have gone wrong.

We may also fail other people. We can disappoint those who trust us, mishandle opportunities or make choices that hurt someone. In such moments, reassurance alone is not enough. We must be willing to listen, take responsibility, make amends where possible and change our behaviour.

But even then, growth remains possible. Our past can inform our future without becoming its permanent definition.

As Samuel Beckett wrote in Worstward Ho, "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better."

The words are not a promise that every setback will lead to success. Rather, they suggest that failure need not be the end of our efforts or the limit of what we can become.

Learning to fail without losing ourselves

Changing our relationship with failure begins with changing the questions we ask ourselves.

Instead of asking, "Why am I such a failure?", we might ask, "What went wrong, and what can I learn from it?" Instead of treating rejection as proof of inadequacy, we can consider whether we need a different approach, more preparation or simply another opportunity.

Not every disappointment needs to become an inspiring story about resilience. Sometimes we need to grieve what we have lost, sit with uncertainty or admit that something mattered deeply to us and did not work out.

Moving forward does not always mean trying again in exactly the same way. It may mean changing direction, adjusting our expectations, seeking help or accepting that a particular door has closed.

There is also no universal timetable for recovery. One person may find the courage to begin again quickly; another may need considerably longer. Neither experience is inherently more worthy.

The goal is not to become someone who never fails. It is to develop a sense of self that can withstand disappointment without collapsing under its weight.

A life cannot be reduced to one result

On the International Day for Failure, perhaps the most useful thing we can do is question why we allow individual setbacks to define our entire lives.

We are allowed to take longer than expected. We are allowed to change our minds, start over and discover strengths we did not know we possessed. We can learn from the past without living indefinitely inside it.

A person can fail an examination and still build a fulfilling career. They can experience heartbreak and remain capable of giving and receiving love. They can lose an opportunity and find another path that leads somewhere meaningful.

None of these possibilities makes disappointment less real. They simply remind us that disappointment is not the whole story.

We are not one grade, one rejection, one mistake or one missed opportunity. We are also the choices we make afterwards, the lessons we carry forward, and the possibilities that remain open to us.

We can fail at something without being failures.
