Spain housing crisis sparks mass protests as soaring rents fuel public anger
Spain's housing crisis has sparked mass protests across around 50 cities, including Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. Tens of thousands are demanding lower rents, stronger tenant protections and an end to evictions. The protests follow the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal, while two emergency housing measures backed by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's government were defeated in Congress. The political setback has also fuelled speculation about a possible snap election.
