Banglamotor gunfire: Tk50,000 extortion demand alleged, ex-Jubo Dal leader among 4 remanded
Police say the accused demanded Tk50,000 from a man before allegedly assaulting him and firing three blank rounds in Banglamotor.
A Dhaka court today (2 October) remanded a former Jubo Dal leader and three others in a case filed over an alleged Tk50,000 extortion demand, assault and blank firing in the capital's Banglamotor area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jahan's court granted four days' remand to Ferdous Ahmed Simon, former convener of Hatirjheel thana Jubo Dal, and three days each to Omar, 32, Morshed, 25, and Shaon, 25.
Arif Reza, a sub-inspector with the prosecution division, confirmed the matter, saying no lawyers appeared for the accused during the hearing.
Earlier in the day, the four were produced before the court. Hatirjheel Police Station Sub-Inspector Nasim, also the investigation officer, sought seven days' remand for each of them for proper investigation.
According to the remand petition, preliminary investigation found that the accused were active members of an organised extortionist and criminal group. Police sought their remand to identify others involved in the incident, locate the absconding accused and gather further information about the case.
The petition also said the accused face various drug-related cases at Hatirjheel and Kalabagan police stations.
According to the case statement, the incident took place around 7:15pm yesterday in front of a house in New Eskaton, near Banglamotor, under Hatirjheel Police Station.
The statement mentioned that Simon stopped Sohan and demanded Tk50,000 from him.
When Sohan refused, Simon allegedly pulled out a pistol, pointed it at his chest, and tried to shoot him, it added.
Simon then struck Sohan on the head with the butt of the pistol, while the other accused assaulted him, according to the case statement.
As locals gathered in the area, the accused left the scene. Sohan received first aid at a nearby pharmacy and was heading for further treatment when his brother-in-law, Moktar Hossain, joined him.
The accused allegedly returned on a motorcycle and tried to assault Sohan again. When Moktar intervened, they allegedly assaulted him as well.
The statement also said that Simon then fired three blank rounds, prompting locals to chase the accused. Several of them were detained, while Simon was caught as he tried to flee.
Police later arrived at the scene and took the detainees into custody. Sohan subsequently filed the case with Hatirjheel Police Station.
