China's experimental maglev train hits 800 kmph in 5.3 seconds

China has set a new short-distance acceleration record with an experimental magnetic levitation train reaching 800 kmph in 5.3 seconds, researchers said, in a test aimed at advancing high-speed propulsion and energy delivery technologies.
The test involved a 1.1-tonne experimental vehicle travelling on a 1-km track at the Donghu Laboratory in Hubei province.
The vehicle uses magnetic levitation, or maglev, technology, in which magnetic forces lift it above the track, removing the friction associated with conventional rail systems. Coils installed along the track generate magnetic fields that propel the vehicle forward, says NDTV.
The latest test marks the third time in six months that the vehicle has broken its own short-distance acceleration record. It reached 650 kmph in seven seconds in June 2025, before subsequent tests recorded speeds of 700 kmph and 798 kmph.
Researchers also tested the vehicle's ability to stop safely after reaching high speed. It was brought to a controlled halt over roughly 200 metres, demonstrating braking technology intended to manage the demands of extreme-speed operation.
The vehicle is not designed for passenger transport. Researchers are using the platform to study high-speed propulsion and energy delivery technologies that could potentially be applied in areas including rocketry, aerospace, fighter aircraft and vacuum-tube transportation systems.
The speeds recorded in the experiments are well above those of existing commercial maglev services. Maglev trains operating in China and Japan typically reach about 320 kmph, while conventional high-speed trains operate at speeds of up to about 350 kmph.
Moving such technology towards passenger use would present significant engineering and economic challenges. These include the high cost of building the required infrastructure, maintaining precise alignment of tracks over long distances and meeting stringent safety requirements for passengers travelling at extreme speeds.
