Stamford University plants trees to mark environment day
Stamford University Bangladesh's Department of Environmental Science (DOES) marked World Environment Day 2026 with an awareness rally and tree-planting programme on Saturday, highlighting the role of academic institutions in environmental stewardship.
Held on campus, the programme aimed to raise awareness among students and the broader community about environmental conservation, sustainable development, and climate change.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Sharif Nafe As-Saber presided over the event, with Agriculture Secretary Dr Rafiqul I Mohamed present as chief guest.
Dr Rafiqul highlighted the contribution of educational institutions to environmental protection.
He urged students to go beyond textbook knowledge and actively engage in tackling environmental challenges.
"The impacts of climate change are increasingly evident. There is no alternative to environmental awareness and responsible behaviour," he said.
He added that the younger generation could help build a sustainable future by planting trees, using resources responsibly, and adopting environmentally conscious lifestyles.
Professor Dr Ahmad Kamruzzaman Majumder, Dean of the Faculty of Science, moderated the proceedings.
Mahmuda Islam, Acting Chairperson of the Department of Environmental Science, delivered the welcoming remarks.
The university registrar, proctor, deans, faculty members, and many students attended.
The day began with an awareness rally, where participants carried banners and placards advocating environmental conservation, biodiversity preservation, and sustainable living.
A tree-planting campaign followed, with species including Jarul and Amla planted on campus.
University officials said the initiative aimed to enhance campus greenery and foster an eco-friendly learning environment.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Sharif Nafe As-Sabre described the Earth as a shared home for humanity in his remarks.
He stressed that collective responsibility is needed to advance environmental protection and sustainable development.
He reaffirmed the university's commitment to transforming Stamford University Bangladesh into a "green campus" through continued action.
The programme concluded with a collective call to strengthen environmental stewardship and make concerted efforts to ensure a liveable planet for future generations.
