Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, the state minister for shipping, has emphasised the need to properly utilise Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering graduates to make the country's shipping and shipbuilding sectors vibrant.

He made the comment while addressing a seminar as the chief guest at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) marking World Maritime Day 2019.

The Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering department of MIST organised the seminar to emphasise the significance of the shipbuilding and shipping sectors in Bangladesh, and its future prospects, said a press statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Thursday.

Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman launched the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering department at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology to generate shipbuilding experts in the country.

Following his lead, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina instructed that a similar department be started at MIST, the state minister said.

Three keynote papers were presented at the seminar. The first paper was delivered by the Chairman of BIWTA Commodore M Mahbub-Ul Islam, titled 'Inland Waterways of Bangladesh: Challenges and Opportunities.'

The related issues of problems and opportunities in inland water transportation in relation to navigability and marine routes in Bangladesh were addressed in his paper.

The next paper was presented by the Director General of the Directorate of Shipping, Commodore Syed Ariful Islam, where he discussed the advances in regulatory framework in shipping and shipbuilding in Bangladesh.

This paper highlighted the regulations and ventures adopted by the government to make the shipping and shipbuilding industries profitable.

He also emphasised the importance of generating skilled manpower to avert marine accidents.

The final paper was presented by Engineer ABM Mahbubar Rashid, titled 'Innovations in Design and Construction of Modern Marine Vehicles.'

Among others, several professionals, academicians, and representatives from different shipyards, dockyards, design houses, shipping companies, educational institutes and government organisations were present at the seminar. MIST Commandant Major General Md Wahid-Uz-Zaman was in the chair.
