Iran fires missiles toward US‑UK Diego Garcia base
UK authorities have not disclosed details about the attempted strike, noting only that the attack was unsuccessful.
Iran fired two ballistic missiles at the US-UK military base Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported today (21 March).
The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that Iran had launched two intermediate-range ballistic missiles toward the base but that they did not hit it, reports Reuters.
Mehr said targeting the base was a "significant step ... that shows that the range of Iran's missiles is beyond what the enemy previously imagined."
UK condemns 'unsuccessful' missile attack
In a statement issued today, the UK Ministry of Defence said Iran's actions, described as lashing out across the region and effectively holding the Strait of Hormuz hostage, pose a threat to British interests as well as to the country's allies.
UK authorities have not disclosed details about the attempted strike on the joint UK-US airbase located on an island in the Indian Ocean, noting only that the attack was unsuccessful, reports UNB.
It remains unclear how close the missiles came to the base, which lies roughly 2,500 miles (4,000 kilometres) from Iran.
