Windows 10 hits 900 million installs; 1 billion coming up by 2020

Back in 2015, Microsoft's Terry Myerson professed that the company had a goal to get Windows 10 onto 1 billion devices in "two to three years".

Unfortunately, Microsoft missed that mark. But the company's Corporate Vice President Yusuf Mehdi announced on Twitter on September 24 that Windows 10 now runs on more than 900 million devices.

#Windows10 is on more than 900M devices! Thanks to our customers, we added more new Windows 10 devices in the last 12 months than ever before. From PCs to HoloLens to Xbox to Surface Hub, Windows continues to power innovation—with more to come next week! https://t.co/G3CRdkFoPT pic.twitter.com/38fKk50IEH— Yusuf Mehdi (@yusuf_i_mehdi) September 24, 2019

This number includes standard Windows 10 desktops and laptops, as well as the Xbox and niche devices like the Surface Hub and Microsoft's HoloLens.

In addition to breaking the 900 million active device mark, Mehdi also revealed that more devices were added to the Windows 10 ecosystem within the last year, than any previous year.

Windows 10 has continued to grow at a significant rate, and the growth will likely continue since Microsoft is planning to drop Windows 7 support in January 2020 – and will cause most businesses to switch over to Windows 10.

At this rate, the operating system will likely hit 1 billion sometime in 2020.
