Xbox unveils disc-to-digital feature
Xbox is introducing a new feature that lets players convert supported physical game discs into digital licences, alongside a 25th-anniversary console and fresh gameplay previews for Fable.
Microsoft has announced a wave of major Xbox developments at Gamescom 2026, headlined by a landmark disc-to-digital initiative designed to modernise physical game collections.
Detailed via an official announcement on Xbox Wire, the new programme allows players to convert supported physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs into account-bound digital licences. Inserting a compatible disc into the console prompts a secure account link, granting instant digital ownership. Once claimed, players can enjoy the full benefits of digital access, including Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere, eliminating the need to keep physical discs in the console drive during play. The rollout begins for Xbox Insiders on 31 August.
Alongside ecosystem updates, hardware took centre stage as pre-orders officially opened for the Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition console during Gamescom. Celebrating 25 years of Xbox heritage, the special-edition package features a retro-inspired translucent green controller. Players looking to grab the standalone accessory will be able to purchase the controller separately starting 20 October 2026.
Software highlights featured comprehensive deep dives into the highly anticipated Fable reboot. Developers showcased extended 18-minute and 30-minute gameplay previews, revealing intricate life-simulation mechanics, dynamic dialogue choices, and fluid real-time combat systems.
Together, these announcements reinforce Microsoft's push towards enhanced digital preservation and flexible multi-platform access across the Xbox family
