Jamaat alleges political group attacking party's women leaders to disrupt polls
They faced threats, obscene comments, and attacks; some of them were beaten, it said.
The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has accused a political group of attacking and harassing the party's women leaders and making obscene remarks against them as well as launching cyber attacks in a bid to thwart the upcoming elections.
"In the past 17 days, women leaders of Jamaat faced threats, obscene comments, and attacks in 33 districts. Some of them were beaten, which is unacceptable in a civilised society," the party's Head of Publicity and Media Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair made the allegations at a press conference in the party's central office in the capital's Moghbazar today (2 February).
Zubair, who is also the party's assistant secretary general, said on 28 January, at an event in Sherpur organised under the presiding officer, Jamaat leaders faced an attack led by a BNP candidate for the area, in which Jamaat Secretary Rezaul Karim of Sreebardi police station was killed.
"Although a case was filed, the accused were released on bail within a week, raising public concern," he said.
Zubair warned that granting bail to those accused of a daylight killing violates the rule of law and it is sending a "dangerous message that criminals can act with impunity".
Emphasising free, fair, and peaceful elections, Zubair said, "The killers must be arrested immediately, brought to justice, and given exemplary punishment. Otherwise, the public will see that even murder goes unpunished."
He also expressed concern over the recent hacking of Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman's X account, describing it as a national security issue. He then called on the government and the Election Commission to act responsibly.
