Sherpur Jamaat leader killing: Prime accused BNP candidate moves HC for bail
The accused filed the bail petition today (1 February) before a High Court bench headed by Justice Md Atabullah, according to sources concerned.
BNP candidate for the Sherpur-3 (Sreebardi–Jhenaigati) constituency, Mahmudul Haque, the prime accused in the killing of a Jamaat-e-Islami leader in Sherpur, has sought bail from the High Court, a day after police named him in the case.
The accused filed the bail petition today (1 February) before a High Court bench headed by Justice Md Atabullah, according to sources concerned.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajol is set to represent him during the bail hearing, the petition said.
According to police, Mahmudul Haque was named as the prime accused in the case. The case was filed over the death of Rezaul Karim, secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami's Sreebardi upazila unit, who was killed during clashes in Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur.
A total of 234 named accused, along with 400 to 500 unidentified individuals, have been listed in the case.
The clash occurred on the afternoon of 28 January during a programme organised by the upazila administration to read out the election manifesto for the Sherpur-3 (Sreebardi–Jhenaigati) constituency.
Rezaul Karim was critically injured in the clash and later died while being taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
The case was filed with Jhenaigati Police Station late on the night of 30 January by the victim's wife, Marzia Begum.
