CPA forms probe committee to assess revenue loss from work stoppage, identify individuals responsible
According to the order, the committee has been tasked with determining the extent of revenue loss resulting from the work abstention, preparing a list of responsible individuals, and recommending ways to recover the losses from those found liable.
The Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) has formed a multi-agency committee to assess the government's revenue losses caused by a work stoppage and suspension of operational activities at the port today (31 January), and to identify those responsible.
The decision was made through an office order issued this evening by the CPA's Director (Administration) Mohammad Omar Faruk, following a programme announced by a group of port employees under the banner of a labour organisation to halt work and operations.
According to the order, the committee has been tasked with determining the extent of revenue loss resulting from the work abstention, preparing a list of responsible individuals, and recommending ways to recover the losses from those found liable.
The committee is headed by the CPA's Member (Engineering) as convener. Its members include Mohammad Tafsir Uddin Bhuiyan, additional commissioner of Chattogram Custom House; Lt Commander Ashik Mahmud, senior chasing master of the CPA; Major Md Anis-uz-Zaman, deputy director (security and operations); and the CPA's chief personnel officer. Hasina Arju, deputy terminal manager (DTM), has been appointed as member secretary.
The committee has been asked to submit its report to the CPA chairman within five working days.
Copies of the order have been sent to all CPA members, the commissioner of Chattogram Custom House, senior officials of the Ministry of Shipping, the chairman of the National Board of Revenue, and relevant departmental heads at the port.
Earlier on Tuesday (29 January), the CPA issued a notice ordering disciplinary action against the employees taking part in the protest. In another notice, the CPA issued a warning to take legal action for staging protests in and around port areas and disrupting port operations.
However, defying the warnings workers and employees enforced daylong work abstention and staged protest in front of port gates effectively paralysing the port operations today protesting authorities decision to lease NCT to Dubai based operator DP World in an unsolicited deal.
The workers have also announced to observe a similar type of protest tomorrow. They also warned tougher programmes if the authority does not refrain from the NCT deal.
