Tarique Rahman urges nation to vote 'Yes' in referendum
On law and order, the BNP chief expressed confidence that BNP could restore stability. "With your [people] support, BNP will once again build a safe Bangladesh," he says.
BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman today (30 January) called on people across the country to vote "Yes" in the referendum scheduled for 12 February.
"As you [people] stamp the 'sheaf of paddy' on the ballot, you will also receive a second ballot paper. Between 'Yes' and 'No', I urge you to give your verdict in favour of 'Yes'," he made the appeal while addressing a large gathering at a BNP divisional election rally held at the Collectorate Eidgah ground in Rangpur tonight.
Speaking on reforms, the BNP chief said the party had placed its 31-point reform proposal before the public around two and a half years ago, when what he described as "authoritarian rule" was weighing heavily on the people.
"BNP had also submitted its proposals to the reform commissions formed by the interim government. While there is agreement on many reform issues, we differ on some. We have been transparent about where we agree and where we disagree," he added.
Remembering those who lost their lives during July Uprising, Tarique Rahman said, "Thousands of people, including Abu Sayed of Rangpur and Wasim of Chattogram, sacrificed their lives to restore the rights of the people. To truly honour their sacrifice, we must ensure people's voting rights, freedom of expression and economic rights.
"We must also uphold the July Charter that we have signed."
Emphasising the need for real change, he said the developments since 5 August have raised people's expectations for a better future. "People want jobs and security, not just flyovers and buildings. They want to walk the streets safely and sleep in peace."
On law and order, Tarique Rahman expressed confidence that BNP could restore stability, citing the party's past record. "With your [people] support, BNP will once again build a safe Bangladesh," he said.
The rally drew thousands of BNP leaders, activists and supporters from across Rangpur division, with speakers reiterating the party's commitment to restoring democracy amid the country's current political situation.
