7-year-old dies at Suhrawardy hospital allegedly after nurse gives wrong anesthesia injection in ward
A seven-year-old child has died allegedly after being administered a wrong anesthesia injection by a nurse at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, prompting claims of gross negligence and the formation of an investigation committee.
Hospital Director Dr Mohammad Shehab Uddin told The Business Standard last night (27 January) that an allegation had been received regarding the child's tragic death due to a nurse's incorrect use of anesthesia injection and doing so without informing anyone concerned.
Describing the incident as "unexpected and gross negligence," he said the accused nurse had been suspended and an investigation committee formed.
Legal action would be taken following the submission of the committee's report, he added.
Zubaer Mohammad Juel Rana, additional deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Tejgaon zone, confirmed that the father of the deceased child had come forward to file a complaint against hospital employees.
Hospital sources said the child was admitted to the surgery ward on 17 January with a finger deformity caused by an electric shock.
Her operation was scheduled for 9am on Tuesday.
As per standard procedure, anesthesia was supposed to be administered inside the operation theatre.
However, it is alleged that senior staff nurse named Yasin administered the injection while the child was still in the ward.
Shortly after the injection, the child became unresponsive. She was rushed for emergency care, but doctors later declared her dead.
Speaking to the media, the child's mother said her daughter had been asleep beside her when the nurse administered the injection.
She said the child moved her hand during the injection but became motionless soon afterward.
Doctors then instructed staff to provide oxygen, she added.
The child's father said they had brought their daughter to the hospital in good health to correct a finger injury.
He alleged that wrong treatment led to her death and demanded justice.
