Metlife Bangladesh invests Tk50 crore in BRAC bank’s social bond
MetLife Bangladesh has invested Tk50 crore in the country's first-ever social bond issued by BRAC Bank, marking a significant milestone in sustainable financing in Bangladesh.
Proceeds from the social bond will be channelled into priority sectors, including women-led micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), affordable housing, healthcare, agriculture, and climate risk mitigation and resilience projects, with the aim of fostering inclusive economic growth and social development.
BRAC Bank, a leading private commercial bank in Bangladesh, is the highest-rated bank in the country by both local and international credit rating agencies. The bank has also secured the top position among Bangladeshi companies in the Bloomberg ESG rating, reflecting its strong commitment to environmental, social and governance standards.
MetLife Bangladesh, the country's leading life insurer, currently serves around one million individual customers and more than 900 corporate clients, and continues to strengthen its investment portfolio. In addition to being one of the largest investors in government bonds, the company is expanding into secured corporate bonds to support sustainable financing for local corporates while generating improved returns for policyholders.
With this latest investment, MetLife Bangladesh's total investment portfolio stands at approximately Tk19,000 crore, subject to update.
