Tarique Rahman to be made BNP chairperson within days: Fakhrul
Fakhrul also said that if the BNP comes to power by winning the upcoming national election, it will form a national government with its partners from the simultaneous movement
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will be elevated to the post of chairperson within the next couple of days, the party's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today (4 January).
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists during a views-exchange meeting in Sylhet this evening.
Fakhrul also said that if the BNP comes to power by winning the upcoming national election, it will form a national government with its partners from the simultaneous movement. However, he clarified that it would not be an all-party government.
Terming the upcoming election crucial for the nation, he said the election is important because people had long been deprived of their voting rights and would finally be able to exercise them again.
Responding to concerns raised in the media about the election, the BNP secretary general said the party itself does not share those fears.
"BNP has demanded elections from the very beginning. We are optimistic. The election process is moving forward, and with everyone's cooperation, the Election Commission will be able to conduct it," he said.
On mob violence, Fakhrul said a new culture of "mobocracy" has emerged in the country since the formation of the interim government, warning that such violence destroys democracy.
"We must come out of this situation," he added.
Referring to the death of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, he said she made a "royal departure" through a democratic struggle. He expressed hope that Khaleda's dream of a democratic Bangladesh would be realised in the future.
Calling upon political parties, Fakhrul said the current opportunity must be utilised properly. "Democracy is not built in a day, nor does democratic culture develop overnight," he said, expressing commitment to building a democratic parliament.
He also announced that the BNP will begin its election campaign from Sylhet.
Earlier in the day, Mirza Fakhrul arrived in Sylhet on a one-day personal visit.
In the afternoon, he paid visits to the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) and Hazrat Shah Paran (RA).
Later in the evening, he met journalists at a hotel near the airport.
