Members of the Bangladesh Army showed up at the scene and restrained the protesters
A group of protesters vandalised the Chhayanaut building in the capital's Dhanmondi area in the early hours today (19 December), as unrest over the death of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi continued to escalate.
"The incident took place around 1:30am when a group arrived at the Chhayanaut building in Dhanmondi and carried out vandalism inside the premises," Shah Mostafa Tariquzzaman, assistant commissioner of police (Dhanmondi zone), told The Business Standard.
"The protesters also set fire [on scraps] on the road in front of the building," he added.
Moments later, members of the Bangladesh Army showed up at the scene and restrained the protesters.
Television live footage showed broken furniture and other items scattered across the premises.
Firefighters were deployed and they managed to douse the flames. Following the incident, police have remained highly alert in and around the area.
