Govt, EC must take responsibility to eliminate public concerns over election: Debapriya
“Public concerns over the upcoming election are evident and it is the responsibility of both the government and the Election Commission to dispel these fears,” he says
Rising public concerns over the national election call for action from both the government and the Election Commission, said Debapriya Bhattacharya, a distinguished fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD).
Speaking at a Citizen's Platform regional consultation in Barishal today (19 November), he warned that the country is passing through a critical period where citizens expect a free, participatory, and credible electoral process.
"Public concerns over the upcoming election are evident and it is the responsibility of both the government and the Election Commission to dispel these fears," he added.
Debapriya claimed, "Although the chief adviser appeared enthusiastic about reform initiatives, that same level of commitment was not visible among his advisers and bureaucrats."
To complete the remaining reforms, he stressed that civil society must exert pressure so that these issues are included in party election manifestos.
Debapriya also called for breaking the system of "plundering the economy" through structural reforms.
Local leaders from various political parties, professionals, and community representatives took part in the consultation.
