BNP reinstates 43 expelled leaders who contested Sylhet city election
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has lifted the expulsion orders of 43 leaders who had contested the 2023 Sylhet City Corporation election for councillor posts in defiance of the party's boycott decision.
The development was confirmed in a press release issued today (9 November), signed by the party's Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
The Sylhet City Corporation election took place under the Awami League government, which the BNP had boycotted as part of its anti-government movement. Following the directive, Sylhet Mayor Ariful Haque Choudhury refrained from seeking re-election.
According to party sources, the expelled leaders later appealed to the BNP high command, expressing regret for their actions and seeking reinstatement. The BNP leadership decided to withdraw the expulsion orders.
