Verdict in case against Hasina to be delivered next week: Adviser Mahfuj
Those involved in the killings and disappearances of student protesters will face justice, and subsequent governments will continue to oversee these proceedings, says the adviser.
Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam has stated that the trial proceedings against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina will conclude next week with a verdict.
"We had a commitment to begin the process of justice — and we have been able to start it. Next week, the trial of Sheikh Hasina, the fascist killer Sheikh Hasina, will take place and a verdict will be delivered," he said at an event in Lakshmipur today (4 November).
"The judgment will bring some relief to the families of the July martyrs, who have endured immense sufferings," he added.
Noting trials are ongoing for many others in the International Crimes Tribunal, Mahfuj said that those involved in the killings and disappearances of student protesters will face justice, and subsequent governments will continue to oversee these proceedings.
Highlighting progress in political reforms, he said, "Political parties have reached a consensus and signed the July Accord. It is a major achievement for Bangladesh that parties could come together and agree on a government-endorsed document. This marks the beginning of a new chapter for the country."
The judgment will bring some relief to the families of the July martyrs, who have endured immense sufferings.
He also emphasised the importance of future governance, "If a government elected implements the July Charter and reform initiatives, we will see the Bangladesh we envisioned [during the July Uprising]—one with balanced power, rule of law, justice, and an end to killings and enforced disappearances."
The adviser made the remarks at a meeting with the families of the July Uprising martyrs at the Ramganj Upazila Parishad auditorium this morning.
Earlier on 1 June, the International Crimes Tribunal accepted charges against Hasina and two others, including Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun.
According to the prosecution's complaint submitted to the tribunal, Hasina is responsible for the killing of 1,400 students and civilians across the country between 16 July and 5 August.
The prosecution alleges that the killings were carried out by law enforcement agencies, members of the Awami League, Chhatra League, and Jubo League under the direct orders, incitement, and provocation of Sheikh Hasina.
The prosecution also stated that there is evidence that deadly weapons were used to suppress the movement on her orders.
Hasina is currently residing in India after fleeing there following a mass uprising during July-August last year.
