Reconsider Ad-din hospital licence cancellation over 6 newborn deaths: Jamaat ameer
He argued that if any negligence, error, or criminal wrongdoing is identified through an investigation, legal action should be taken against those responsible.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has called on the government to reconsider its decision to cancel the licence of Ad-din Medical College Hospital following the deaths of six newborns.
In a Facebook post last night (11 June), Shafiqur expressed condolences over the incident but questioned the government's decision to revoke the hospital's licence before completing a full investigation.
"We all expressed deep sorrow and sympathy over the recent deaths of six newborns at Ad-din Hospital. The incident is undoubtedly very tragic," he wrote.
Referring to the government's action, he said, "The government today cancelled the hospital's licence over the incident. This was not the right decision."
He argued that if any negligence, error, or criminal wrongdoing is identified through an investigation, legal action should be taken against those responsible.
"Instead, the licence of a hospital known as the 'hospital of the poor' and one that had earned public trust through quality healthcare services has been cancelled. Ultimately, it is the public who will suffer," he said.
Shafiqur also highlighted the institution's role in medical education, noting that it operates as a medical college hospital with hundreds of students enrolled.
"It is also a medical college hospital. There are probably 400 to 500 medical students studying there. In addition, nursing courses are being conducted. Where will they go now?" he asked.
Calling for a review of the decision, he said, "In the interest of students and the public, this decision should be reconsidered. If anyone is found guilty, action should be taken against them in accordance with the law. But cancelling the licence and shutting down the hospital is not desirable."
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) yesterday revoked the licence of Ad-din Medical College Hospital in Moghbazar after finding the hospital's response to a show-cause notice unsatisfactory. The notice was issued following the deaths of six newborns at the hospital on 27 May.
The health authorities had formed an investigation committee under Section 11(1) of The Medical Practice and Private Clinics and Laboratories (Regulation) Ordinance, 1982, to examine the incident. Based on the committee's findings, the DGHS served a show-cause notice on 4 June, asking the hospital to explain why its licence should not be cancelled. Following a review of the hospital's response, the authorities decided to revoke its licence.
