A Dhaka court today (29 September) sent to jail five people, including Saiful Islam Rabbi, former coordinator of Students Against Discrimination, in an extortion case filed by a private hospital in Mohammadpur.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Atikur Rahman passed the order and set 30 September for a remand hearing, said Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's prosecution division.
The other accused are Abdur Rahman Manik, Habibur Rahman Forhad, Mohammad Abu Sufian, and Md Shahin Hossain.
According to the case statement, on 20 September, Shahin took his pregnant wife to Safe Hospital in Mohammadpur, where she gave birth to a stillborn baby. Later, the accused allegedly demanded Tk3 lakh from the hospital owner's son, threatening to file a case over the incident. When the demand was refused, they allegedly vandalised equipment worth Tk1.5 lakh, abducted the owner's son, and extorted Tk1.2 lakh.
On 28 September, they allegedly collected another Tk1 lakh and continued pressuring for more money through threats.
