Bangladeshi photojournalist’s work featured in US textbook

Internationally published Bangladeshi photojournalist Mahmud Hossain Opu has earned global recognition as his work on climate migration is now featured in the 'National Geographic Learning AP Human Geography' textbook, a widely used educational resource in the United States.
The photograph, originally published in National Geographic, has been licensed for inclusion in the textbook, where it is used to illustrate one of the most pressing human issues of the 21st century—climate migration. Students across the US and beyond will now encounter Opu's work as part of their classroom learning.
Bangladesh, one of the world's most climate-vulnerable countries, is already witnessing the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people each year due to floods, river erosion, and salinity intrusion. Opu's photograph captures these struggles in a way that bridges statistics with human experience.
"When I took this photograph, I wanted the world to see that climate change is not just about science or numbers—it's about people, families, and survival," Opu said. "To know that my work is shaping how young people learn about our shared future is deeply meaningful."
Through this recognition, Opu's work continues to connect Bangladesh's climate reality with global conversations on change and resilience.
