Gazipur AL leader sent to jail over flash procession in Tejgaon
Police arrested Askor yesterday from Dhaka’s Farmgate area

A Dhaka court has sent SM Ashraful Alam Askor, head of the Bangla Department at Tejgaon College and acting president of Gazipur's Kashimpur Thana Awami League, to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act over staging a flash procession in Tejgaon.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akhter passed the order today (19 September) after rejecting a bail petition.
Tejgaon Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Shariful Islam, the investigating officer of the case, produced Askor before the court and sought an order to keep him in jail.
In the remand prayer, police claimed that sufficient evidence had been found during interrogation linking the accused to the incident.
According to the investigation, Askor, 60, also the secretary of education and human resources affairs of Gazipur Metropolitan Awami League, has been allegedly leading flash processions of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations in Dhaka and also financing such programmes.
Police arrested Askor yesterday from Dhaka's Farmgate area.
According to the case statement, on 7 September around noon, leaders and activists of the banned Awami League, and its affiliates Chhatra League and Jubo League, brought out a procession with banners in front of 2/A Park Town Restaurant in Monipuripara under Tejgaon Police Station.
At one stage of the procession, two crude bombs were detonated, creating panic among the public.
Police rushed to the spot and arrested an individual named Mirajul Islam, while others managed to flee.
Sub-Inspector AKM Niaz Uddin Molla of Tejgaon Police Station later filed the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Another AL leader sent to jail over flash procession in Banglamotor
Meanwhile, in a separate case filed under Anti-Terrorism Act, a Dhaka court has sent Md Kamruzzaman, a member of Awami League's Agriculture and Cooperatives Sub-Committee, to jail over staging a flash procession in the capital's Banglamotor.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akhter passed the order today after rejecting a bail petition.
Police had arrested Kamruzzaman yesterday from Dhaka's Moghbazar area.
According to the case statement, on 12 September around 2:45pm, members of the banned Awami League, Chhatra League, and other affiliated bodies brought out a procession in front of Rupayan Tower in Banglamotor. They allegedly chanted anti-government slogans, spread propaganda, and conspired against the state.
As police reached the spot around 3:15pm, the participants attempted to flee, and several were detained. A case was later filed the same day at Ramna Model Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
