CU marks Tree Plantation Programme 2025 aimed at conserving threatened species

Chittagong University (CU) on Sunday observed Tree Plantation Programme 2025 with a series of events highlighting the conservation of threatened tree species and the broader need for ecological balance.
The day began with a colourful rally from the central Shaheed Minar where students carried placards calling for greater environmental awareness. Saplings were later planted near the university's hanging bridge as part of the campaign.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Yahya Akhter inaugurated the programme, joined by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr Mohammad Shamim Uddin Khan, deans of different faculties, and the director of the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, Professor Dr Md Aktar Hossain. Senior officials from Al-Arafah Islami Bank, which partnered in the event, also attended, according to a press release.
At noon, the institute hosted a seminar titled "Conservation Effort of Threatened Tree Species at Chittagong University Campus: Our Experience and Way Forward." Keynote speaker Professor Dr Mohammad Kamal Hossain stressed the urgency of protecting native and endangered species.
Discussants included Science Faculty Dean Professor Dr Mohammad Al-Amin, Arts and Humanities Faculty Dean Professor Dr Md Iqbal Shaheen Khan, Business Studies Faculty Dean Professor Dr Mohammad Taiyub Chowdhury, along with representatives from Al-Arafah Islami Bank.
Chairing the seminar, institute director Professor Dr Md Aktar Hossain stressed the importance of large-scale tree plantation, as well as proper care and maintenance, to preserve the country's ecological balance.
