Will not let July martyrs' blood go in vain: Ctg Mayor Shahadat
Reflecting on the significance of the day, Shahadat said it reminds the nation how far it has failed in repaying the debt to those who gave their lives for democracy.

Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain today (5 August) said the blood of the martyrs of the July Uprising will not be allowed to go in vain, noting that their [martyr] ideals will guide the ongoing struggle to restore democracy in Bangladesh.
"We have commemorated the uprising day many times. This time, we must realise our dream -- of a corruption-free Bangladesh where fundamental rights and democracy prevail," the mayor told journalists after visiting the grave of martyr Mohammad Alam at Garibullah Shah Mazar in Dampara, Chattogram, marking "July Uprising Day 2025".
Reflecting on the significance of the day, Shahadat said it reminds the nation how far it has failed in repaying the debt to those who gave their lives for democracy.
"To overcome that failure, we must set aside divisions and unite under the banner of national unity," he added.
"5 August is a day of both joy and sorrow for us," the mayor noted. "Joy, because the new generation still remembers the blood debt of the martyrs. Sorrow, because their families continue to mourn," he said.
The mayor emphasised that if the nation truly wishes to honour the sacrifice of the martyrs, it must come together in unity, regardless of party or ideology.
"Without unity, the Bangladesh that the martyrs envisioned cannot be achieved," he noted.
After paying respects at the grave, Shahadat also spoke with martyr Mohammad Alam's family and pledged full support for them.
