A mafia regime was established over past 16 years: CA Yunus
82 martyred families, 1,483 'July fighters' honoured by Dhaka district administration

Over the past 16 years, a mafia regime was established, said Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus today (5 August) while virtually addressing a ceremony in observance of the July Uprising Day.
In his speech, he said, "The fascist government had tried to cling to power by firing bullets at the people. Over the past 16 years, a mafia regime was established. 5 August is not just a special day, it marks a vow, a tale of mass awakening and the nation's rebirth from fascist rule."
In observance of the July Uprising Day, the Dhaka district administration honoured 82 families of martyrs and 1,483 individuals recognised as "July fighters" at the ceremony held at Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the capital.
The chief adviser added, "Today, I pay my deepest respects to all the brave freedom fighters of the 1971 Liberation War. It is because of their sacrifices that we have earned an independent, sovereign Bangladesh."
The programme was presided over by Dhaka Deputy Commissioner Tanvir Ahmed.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter and Social Welfare, Women and Children Affairs Adviser Sharmin S Murshid were also present at the event.
In his welcome remarks, DC Tanvir Ahmed said, "An administrative vacuum was created as collaborators of the fallen fascist regime fled the scene."
Overcoming that challenge and restoring dynamic public service delivery was a major task, and they have succeeded, he added.
Prior to the main event, a documentary on the July Uprising was screened. Later, Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Sharf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury and DC Tanvir Ahmed presented crests and gift boxes to the families of martyrs and the July Fighters.
