Policemen failing dope test will be dismissed: DMP commissioner

Any police member failing the drug test will be dismissed from the service.

Detectives are already keeping close tabs on the policemen who are taking drugs or involved in drug peddling.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said this on Sunday while addressing a monthly crime conference at Bangladesh Police Auditorium in the capital's Rajarbagh.

"Using the information obtained from beat policing and arrested drug peddlers, we have to come up with a list of drug addicts. We will talk to the parents of drug addicts and help them with the rehabilitation process," Shafiqul Islam said.

Regarding the street children taking drugs including an adhesive solution, locally known as "Dandi," the DMP commissioner said they might get involved in crimes such as snatching in the future.

So he instructed the law enforces to caution the retailers not to sell shoe solvent and glue to children.

The DMP commissioner also said the number of confiscated drugs, arrestees, and cases filed in these connections increased significantly in July.

People, seeking service in the police stations, expressed satisfaction, Shafiqul Islam said. "We have to keep it up and make our services better."

He also said the detection rate of murder, robbery, and snatching in Dhaka city was also good.

During the conference, DMP commissioner gave awards to several policemen and divisions of DMP for their performance in July.

Mirpur division secured the first position among crime divisions.

And detective branch of Tejgaon division earned the top position among DMP's detective divisions.

In traffic division, both Gulshan and Uttara divisions secured the top spot.

Also, 37 police officers received awards for their performance in July.
