Fisheries and Livestock adviser speaks at July uprising memorial discussion
Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhtar emphasized the importance of honoring the sacrifices made by those who lost their lives or were injured during the July Movement, stating, "To pay tribute to their sacrifices, we must build a new Bangladesh for the future, with everyone's participation."
The Advisor made these remarks as the chief guest at the "July Uprising Revival: Remembrance and Discussion Program-2025," held this morning at People's University in Savar.
In her speech, Advisor Akhtar explained, "The July warriors did not join the movement for personal gain. They fought for their love of the country, and their thoughts and consciousness were of a high level." She continued, "July has always been a painful time for us, and the recent tragic incident at Milestone School has deepened our collective grief."
Reflecting on the July-August movement, the Advisor shared her personal experiences, noting that she visited various locations to observe the movement and participated directly in some areas. She praised the courage and organisational participation of the students of People's University, particularly during the movement, highlighting the enduring inspiration provided by leaders like Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury.
She further stated, "Although I serve in the interim government, the fascist structures within our state apparatus have not yet been completely dismantled. Thus, it is crucial for the government to work consciously. This fight is not just for the government but for all of us."
The Advisor also addressed the role of women in the movement, stating, "While women were at the forefront of the July uprising, their visible presence has significantly declined since August. This reality forces us to reconsider. We must remember that the movement is far from over."
Speaking directly to the students, she urged them to be vigilant against the tactics used by neighbouring countries and international imperialist powers, which include economic oppression. "Political and social awareness on these issues is essential," she added.
Vice-Chancellor Dr Md Abul Hossain also spoke as a special guest at the event, which was chaired by Professor Nilufar Sultana, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the university. Students from various departments of the university actively participated in the discussion.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, special awards were presented in honour of the students injured in the July Uprising.
