Fakhrul visits Jamaat ameer at hospital
Shafiqur returned home around 9pm after receiving treatment at the hospital
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman at the Ibn Sina Hospital in the capital's Dhanmondi tonight (19 July).
Fakhrul was accompanied by BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan during the hospital visit around 8:30pm, BNP Media Cell member Shairul Kabir Khan told the media.
They spoke with Shafiqur and enquired about his physical condition.
Later, around 9pm, Shafiqur returned home after receiving medical treatment at the hospital.
In a post on his Facebook account around 11pm, the Jamaat chief expressed gratitude to all well-wishers at home and abroad who inquired about his condition and prayed for him.
Fakhrul said that BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman was concerned about the Jamaat chief's health and asked him to visit on his behalf.
"It is our political responsibility to be present when any political leader falls ill. That's why we came here to see the Jamaat Ameer," Fakhrul said.
He also wished Shafiqur a speedy recovery, adding, "In the current critical political situation, it is very important that the Jamaat Ameer recovers quickly."
Jamaat-e-Islami Naib Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher and Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar were also present during the visit.
Jamaat leaders expressed heartfelt gratitude to the BNP delegation for the visit.
Earlier in the day, Shafiqur suddenly fell ill while delivering speech at the party's national rally held at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. Despite collapsing twice during his speech, he chose to complete it.
Shafiqur collapsed around seven and a half minutes into his address at the rally, which was organised to press home the party's seven-point demand.
He later resumed his speech from a sitting position, even though a doctor present on the stage reportedly advised him against continuing his address.
He was later hospitalised at the Ibn Sina Hospital in the evening.
According to the party's press wing, Shafiqur's condition was stable, with his blood pressure and sugar levels under control.
The party had urged all to pray for his quick recovery.
