A local ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was killed in a road accident in Faridpur early this morning (19 July), while en route to the party's national rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka.

The deceased was identified as Maulana Abu Sayed, 52, ameer of Dacope upazila unit and an assistant moulvi at Chalna Billalia Alim Madrasa in Khulna.

He is survived by his wife and four daughters.

The accident took place at the Bhanga intersection in Faridpur, where witnesses said Abu Sayed and several others had stopped for tea in the early hours. As they parked their vehicle, Sayed noticed the party banner on their bus had come loose and began fixing it.

At that moment, a bus of Royal Paribahan reportedly rammed into him from behind, leaving him dead on the spot and injuring two others, Jamaat activists Md Anisur Rahman and Md Iqbal Hossain.

The injured were admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

Speaking to The Business Standard, Bhanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ashraf Hossain said, "A man was killed on the spot in a road accident early Saturday. Two to three others were injured and have been taken to the hospital. They are currently receiving treatment."

Jamaat leaders and activists were travelling to Dhaka from Khulna in a convoy of 260 buses ahead of the party's much-anticipated national rally at Suhrawardy Udyan today.
